1 The Fraternity Before the Flag

There was no nation in 1776. There was only the network.

Two hundred fifty years ago this summer, fifty-six men signed a document declaring the existence of a country that did not, in any meaningful sense, exist yet.

Strip away the mythology for a moment and look at what was actually on the ground in the thirteen colonies in 1776. There was no shared currency — Massachusetts pounds were not Virginia pounds were not Pennsylvania pounds, and none of them were reliably worth anything outside their own colony. There was no shared religion — Puritan Massachusetts, Anglican Virginia, Quaker Pennsylvania, and Catholic Maryland did not worship the same way, answer to the same authority, or necessarily trust one another’s sincerity. There was no shared economy — a Boston merchant and a Charleston planter were not participants in one market; they were participants in different markets that happened to share an ocean. There was no shared identity. A man from Georgia and a man from New Hampshire in 1776 had more in common with the English they were about to fight than with each other.

This is the part the commemorative version of the story skips past. The United States was not the product of a pre-existing American people deciding to formalize their nationhood. The American people did not yet exist. What existed instead was a project — and projects require infrastructure. Coordination across thirteen separate colonial governments, none of which had ever been asked to act as one, does not happen spontaneously. It happens through a network. The question worth asking, two hundred fifty years on, is which network.

The Only Thing Holding Together

By the early 1770s, Freemasonry was the one institution operating across all thirteen colonies that was not a colonial government, not a religious denomination, and not a local merchant guild. Lodges existed from Massachusetts to Georgia, organized under recognizable degree structures, observing common ritual forms, and — critically — in regular communication with each other and with lodges in Britain and on the European continent.

That last point matters more than it first appears to. A Mason traveling from Boston to Charleston in 1774 could walk into a lodge meeting as a recognized brother, vetted by a system of signs, words, and degrees that functioned the same way in both cities. No colonial government could offer that. No church could offer that across denominational lines. No merchant network could offer that without an existing trade relationship. The lodge system was, in the most literal operational sense, the only transcolonial infrastructure available to the founding generation.

DOCUMENTED – Masonic lodge membership among prominent figures of the founding era is extensively documented through lodge records, correspondence, and contemporaneous accounts. Washington’s membership in the Fredericksburg lodge, Franklin’s leadership in Philadelphia’s St. John’s Lodge and later the Lodge of the Nine Sisters in Paris, and the broader presence of Masonic affiliation among Continental Congress delegates and Continental Army officers are matters of historical record, not speculation.

This is the argument worth sitting with: the founders did not select Freemasonry because of some shared occult ideology that overrode their political and religious differences. They used it because it was the only thing available that could carry coordination across a project with no other unifying mechanism. Structural necessity, not philosophical preference, is the more defensible starting claim — and it happens to be the more interesting one, because it explains why the network’s influence on the country’s founding architecture runs as deep as it does.

Two Rites, One Project

Freemasonry in the colonial period was not monolithic. Broadly, two ritual lineages mattered to the American story: the York Rite, with its roots in English and particularly the “ancient” Masonic tradition that had spread through the colonies via military and trade lodges, and the Scottish Rite, which would not formally organize its American supreme councils until after the Revolution but whose philosophical and ritual influence — carried through figures educated in or exposed to Continental Masonic thought — was already present in the prerevolutionary intellectual current.

Washington’s Masonic formation sat within the York tradition — the more austere, civic-virtue-coded lineage that would go on to dominate American Masonic self-presentation for the next century. Many of the Continental Army’s officer corps, and a meaningful share of the Continental Congress, moved through this same lodge culture. It gave them a shared vocabulary of obligation, hierarchy, and oath that mapped cleanly onto the demands of building a military and political coalition out of thirteen mutually suspicious colonies.

Benjamin Franklin’s path ran differently, and it is the more consequential one for understanding where this series is ultimately headed. Franklin’s Masonic life was not confined to Philadelphia. By the time he was serving as the American commissioner to France during the Revolution, he was a celebrated member of French Masonic circles — most notably the Lodge of the Nine Sisters in Paris, a lodge explicitly organized around Enlightenment philosophy, scientific inquiry, and reformist political thought, counting among its membership figures central to French intellectual and revolutionary life.

DOCUMENTED – Franklin’s membership and active participation in the Lodge of the Nine Sisters (Loge des Neuf Sœurs) during his time in Paris, including his role in initiating Voltaire into the lodge in 1778, is well-documented in both Masonic and conventional historical sources.

This is not a minor biographical footnote. Franklin’s access to the French intellectual and financial networks that ultimately secured the alliance, the loans, and the military support that allowed the Revolution to succeed was substantially mediated through Masonic relationship. The French Lodge was not simply a social club he happened to belong to while abroad — it was operational infrastructure for the diplomatic project that won the war.

There was no America in 1776. There was a project, and the project needed a network. The Masonic lodge system was the only one available that crossed every colonial line at once.

What the Network Was Built to Do

It is worth being precise about what this claim is and is not. It is not the claim that the American Revolution was a Masonic conspiracy, that the lodges voted on independence, or that Masonic ritual dictated political outcomes. The historical record does not support that framing, and Naradigm Shift does not traffic in claims the record cannot carry.

The claim is narrower and, we think, more durable: in the absence of any other transcolonial institution, the Masonic network functioned as the connective tissue that allowed thirteen separate political entities with no shared currency, religion, or economy to coordinate a unified military and political project across eight years of war and the subsequent task of constitutional formation. The network did not invent the Revolution’s ideals. It carried them — across distances, across colonial lines, and across the Atlantic to Paris — in a way nothing else in the colonial world was structurally capable of doing.

That distinction — between origin and infrastructure — is the one this series will return to again and again, because it is also the distinction at the heart of how power has continued to organize itself in America for two hundred fifty years since. The ideals of the founding were genuinely held by genuine people. But ideals do not implement themselves. They require a network willing to carry them — and networks, once built, do not dissolve when the original project concludes. They persist. They get used again.

The Network That Did Not Go Away

Here is where this article ends and the rest of the series begins. The Masonic infrastructure that carried the Revolution did not disband once the Treaty of Paris was signed. It built the Constitution’s host city, debated New World philosophical projects descended from Bacon’s New Atlantis, and — according to a body of oral tradition we will examine with appropriate care in the articles ahead — carried claims of contact with intelligences beyond the purely human that some of the founding generation themselves believed shaped the outcome of the war.

But the more immediately relevant continuity is structural, not occult. A network built to coordinate a temporary project — winning independence — became, almost by default, the connective tissue available for the next project: building the permanent administrative apparatus of a nation that, by design, would rotate its elected leadership every four to eight years while needing something to persist underneath that rotation.

Two hundred fifty years later, the country is still negotiating that exact tension — not in lodge rooms now, but in federal courtrooms, over the question of who actually controls the administrative state that survives every administration. We will get to that directly, and to where the current fight sits relative to the founding pattern, six articles from now.

For now, the starting claim stands on its own: there was no America in 1776. There was a network capable of building one. Everything that follows in this series traces what that network built, who it answered to, and what happened to the project once the original architects were gone.
